A technical design project (RIBA Stage 4), involving the detailed design of an extension and refurbishment to an existing semi-detached dwelling in Ingatestone, Redhill. The scheme, developed through the planning stages by other members of Sawkings Architects, introduces a contemporary ground-floor extension designed to provide spaces better suited to the client’s brief and vision of the dwelling.
The form and arrangement of the extension respond directly to the property’s picturesque rear amenity, creating generous new social spaces, alongside a large contemporary kitchen and dining area. The material palette remains sympathetic to the existing dwelling, while refined contemporary detailing establishes a clear distinction between the original building and the new intervention.
Due to the property’s southern orientation, a bespoke solar-shading strategy was incorporated into the design. Concealed external roller blinds are integrated within the envelope of the extension, providing adjustable solar control throughout the day to reduce overheating while retaining views towards the rear garden. Slim-frame glazing further minimises visual obstruction, strengthening the connection between the internal living spaces and the surrounding landscape and creating a seamless transition between inside and outside.
This project was completed during my time at Sawkings Architects. All rights remain with Sawkings Architects. The CGI was originally developed by another member of Sawkings Architects, and subsequently amended by me to reflect post-planning design alterations.
